A shingle roof is a system, this system is not complete at just shingles. The shingle roof system includes underlayments, flashings and ventilation. Each item is a necessary component to a properly installed shingle roof system.

If a tear off is necessary Reliable American will first protect your property. Protection includes tarps and wood structures, but also includes moving of temporary items away from the building such as grills and potted plants. This protection is something not every company will include in their bid and is paramount to a clean, neat and orderly job site.

Ice shield is installed at all the problem areas. Minimum code states ice shield should only be installed at gutter lines, however valleys and flashing areas are also very important. Reliable American, installs ice shield at gutter lines, valleys, chimneys, skylights, pipes, where the roof meets the wall. Minimum code isn't good enough, but is what most other roofers will install. Reliable American exceeds minimum code.

Felt papers vary, and your roof's substrate (wood deck) should be covered with some kind of felt paper. Reliable American prefers 30 LB organic or fiberglass reinforced felt paper. Some roofers may install 15 LB which is the cheapest available but offers minimal protection. Other felt papers include newer fiberglass or even plastic papers.

Shingles are installed by professional and certified craftsmen. Reliable American uses nails, not staples. A minimum of 4 nails are used in the shingles to keep them tight to the building. 6 nails will be used on steeper surfaces. Each shingle has a different installation pattern, there is no one size fits all shingling method.

Ventilation is key to a long lasting roof system. Without proper ventilation your shingles will last only half as long as intended by the manufacturers, in addition you won't have a warranty by the shingle manufacturer. These ventilation systems include ridge vent, mushroom/breather vents, and baffled kitchen or bathroom vents. There are even electrically or solar powered attic fans. Each one serves a function and there are no one size fits all solutions. A very common mistake by other roofers is the installation of ridge vent on a short ridge. On a tear off, flashings should NOT be re-used. These flashings will become bent during the tear off process, plus will not last as long as the new shingles. What good is a new roof with an old flashing? Flashings can be aluminum, copper or steel, and are available with a long lasting paint finish.

Clean up, clean up, clean up. We want to make sure when we leave that the grounds are as clean, or cleaner, than before we arrived. We clean by sweeping, raking, and using a using a magnet on wheels to collect any stray nails. Reliable American does not want any children or pets to step on any nails. Plus stray nails won't do any good to your lawn mower.
